Strategy 3 - Heed the speed bumps

cartoon cars on a road at a bottleneckSome people with MS report experiencing a slowing in their ability to process information. The first strategy to deal with this is to allow yourself the time that you need. Be patient with yourself and ask others to be patient with you. It may be hard to do this, but think about it: if you have mobility issues you give yourself and others give you the time that you need, for example, to cross the road.

Making sense of information amidst ongoing noise and distraction is difficult for anyone, and almost impossible if your cognitive function is compromised.

So turn off distractions like TV, radio and background noise. It might be an idea to also turn off your mobile phone. Give yourself the best chance possible by avoiding overstimulating environments and use positive talk. Acknowledge that you need time but also acknowledge that you are not daft: your brain simply needs a little more time to process the information than it used to.

When it comes to work, avoid becoming overwhelmed by breaking what you have to do into small achievable steps or goals. Allow yourself time to prepare, write down key points and tick them off as you go along if necessary.

Don’t be afraid to ask people to speak more slowly, to repeat content or to allow you time to take notes. Ask colleagues if you can record meetings.

Be careful how you schedule your day – take the type of task and your fatigue levels into account when you plan your day. Keep tasks that you find more difficult for parts of the day when you have the most energy and you are less likely to be tired or distracted.
