Cognitive symptoms can affect your life at work, college and home. They can also influence your leisure activities and your social life which are really important and can help to boost your brain health and cognitive reserve. Cognitive symptoms can really sap confidence and may contribute to anxiety and impact on your relationships.

Some symptoms can be frustrating and distressing, especially if they affect your ability to have conversations, work and manage your own affairs.

You might lose confidence in yourself, particularly when it comes to school or college and even your social life – it can be hard to be out socialising and struggle to recall your friend’s name. You might feel a little unsure at work, and this can knock you for six. You may find it harder to emotionally relate to your partner and family, and people may misinterpret your cognitive difficulties as just you being difficult or lazy or even rude. Some other symptoms of MS, like poor articulation, poor coordination and rapid eye movements are easy to mistake as cognitive symptoms too, even though they are not. But all these changes can lead to low self-esteem and some people are afraid that they are going mad and they don’t want to tell anyone.

It is important not to forget that your brain is still capable of doing lots of amazing things, and also that you can adopt strategies to bolster the areas where you are having problems and you can incorporate brain health into your daily routine to optimise how your brain functions.

If you feel you are in such a spiral it may help to chat to someone else who is also experiencing similar symptoms or family or even your doctor or other health professionals. It is important not to bottle it up inside and equally important not to put your head in the sand about brain health.

Cognitive impairment can occur early or late in the disease and can be mild or severe. Cognitive impairment is more frequent and reported to be more severe in progressive types of MS rather than in relapsing-remitting MS. There is evidence that cognitive impairment is present in a significant proportion of people quite some time before their MS symptoms appear, and first signs can be subtle and may occur so slowly that it may be a family member, loved one or friend who points them out.

The good news is that there are some actions you can take that may lessen the impact that the disease has on your cognitive function and help you to maximise it for as long as possible. Talking about it could help too.

It really is critical to take action and start living a brain healthy life as soon as possible because cognitive impairment is known to have significant impact on quality of life, self esteem, relationships and is an important factor in determining whether you carry on on working.

Some people can have built up considerable damage before cognitive symptoms become apparent so it is really important to start boosting your brain health as soon as you receive a diagnosis. Don’t wait until symptoms appear.
